You'll join the Department of Home Affairs as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, implementing, managing and retiring the physical, virtual, network and cloud infrastructure that underpins the department's digital services. The work centres on the Virtual Service Environment (VSE): maintaining, monitoring and upgrading its environments and servers, planning, designing, building and testing new virtual services in line with the operational models set by application owners, and promoting their adoption to ICT stakeholders and project teams through workshops and hands-on guidance. You'll also work across the department's secure internet gateway, secure systems, data centre and network services: delivering major and minor project work, enhancing and remediating network and gateway systems, supporting capacity planning (including mainframe), and managing server and network infrastructure across geographically dispersed environments. Fleet and lifecycle oversight of ICT infrastructure assets, data centre operations and vendor coordination, and data centre footprint optimisation across commercial and departmental facilities nationwide are part of the brief, with some interstate travel. You'll lead the technical deliverables on projects, transfer skills and knowledge to departmental staff, and leave behind business, functional and technical specifications, as-built documentation, SOPs and deployment guides.

Each candidate must upload a one page pitch addressing all criteria specified. This includes responding to the Job Details, Key Responsibilities, and Essential Criteria. The pitch cannot be more than 5000 characters. Write the pitch in STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and sell your capability rather than listing duties. Address each of the six essential criteria by name and target the SFIA level Home Affairs has set for it: IT infrastructure level 4, systems installation and removal level 5, systems design level 5, problem management level 4, and programming/software development level 3. Lead with virtual service environment and data centre work you have owned end to end (design, deployment, upgrade, decommissioning), the secure web and email gateway experience behind criterion 6, and how you applied the PSPF and ISM to network service delivery. Cover the desirable criteria where space allows: availability management, Cisco routing and switching, and Palo Alto, Fortigate or F5 firewall and load balancing. If you have worked at the Department of Home Affairs before, include with your application the branch and division you worked in, your role and your dates.
