You'll work on NEXUS, the life critical application the Australian Maritime Safety Authority relies on to coordinate assets in maritime and aviation search and rescue incidents, and to triage and respond to pollution events. Your users are the staff and intelligence operators of AMSA's Rescue Coordination Centre Australia, so the software you write has real operational consequence. NEXUS spans several technologies: .NET, Java, AWS, Oracle PL/SQL and ArcGIS. Your focus is the cloud and back-end Java side, made up of multiple Java and Java EE JMS components handling data integration and message processing, plus the AWS components that carry integrations with AMSA's external clients and partners. You'll join a small team of highly skilled Java and .NET developers and subject matter experts who hold years of accumulated business knowledge and support NEXUS in-house. Day to day you'll build enterprise-grade software in Java and Oracle, develop and maintain web UI in ReactJS, CSS and HTML, design data models through to physical implementation on Oracle, and work across RESTful OpenAPI specifications, SOAP WSDLs and XML schemas. You'll also maintain the DevOps workflows behind it all in Jenkins, Git, Maven and Ant, build and ship NEXUS releases, and advise the Applications Director and CIO. The role carries a rostered on-call commitment shared across the team. Escalations to the development team between 10pm and 6am have historically been rare, roughly one a year.

• Develop enterprise-grade software using Java and Oracle technologies • Develop and maintain web-based UI using ReactJS, CSS and HTML • Design data models, translate to physical data models and implement using Oracle Database • Implement CRUD operations on the database using Java Object-Relational Mapping frameworks • Produce and maintain detailed design artefacts and technical specifications • Create and work with RESTful OpenAPI specifications, SOAP WSDLs and XML Schemas • Develop and maintain DevOps workflows using Jenkins, Git, Maven and Ant • Perform and build NEXUS software releases following established processes • Provide advice and support for the Applications Director and CIO • Provide on-call services as part of a team roster

Essential skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • At least 8 years Java experience, enterprise design patterns, JPA, Hibernate ORM. JEE an advantage, reactive programming an advantage • Java web service development, SOAP and REST APIs, OpenAPI/XSD Schemas, XML/JSON, Spring/SpringBoot • Unix/Linux, Bash • Maven lifecycle management, continuous integration, unit and system integration testing • Major database experience including data modelling and stored procedures, Oracle preferred • Willingness to be on call 24x7 • AWS development (EC2, Lambdas, API Gateway, S3/SQS, CloudFormation) Qualifications and experience • Strong commitment to software engineering processes and a proven ability to develop robust and maintainable software • A proven ability to document technical processes • Implement and maintain automated testing, and provide feedback on implementation and design aspects as required from other areas • Assist in the continuous improvement process by developing and enhancing procedures and producing documentation, including detailed design documentation

Hybrid. Ability to attend the office, with regular working from home available.

Programming/software development: Level 6 (SFIA) Develops organisational policies, standards, and guidelines for software construction and refactoring. Plans and leads software construction activities for strategic, large and complex development projects. Adapts or develops new methods and organisational capabilities and drives adoption of, and adherence to policies and standards.
